Ski chalets near Toronto

Four ski areas from one to three hours north of the city, which hills you can actually ski on a day ticket, and what to ask the owner of a ski chalet.

Southern Ontario’s ski hills are small next to the Rockies or Quebec, but they are close: the first ones are about an hour up Highway 400, and several stay open in the evening under lights. A chalet or winter cottage nearby turns a long day trip into a weekend, with time to ski in the morning, go back for lunch and try night skiing when the slopes are quieter.

One thing surprises many visitors: most of the hills around Collingwood are private clubs that need a membership. Below are the areas that sell lift tickets to the public, closest first, with what each suits best.

Lake Simcoe

1. Barrie & Oro-Medonte: Snow Valley, Horseshoe and Moonstone

≈ 1 h from Toronto · Ontario

Three hills about an hour from Toronto. Snow Valley in Minesing, just west of Barrie, is a small family hill with night skiing and a big snow-tubing park, good for children and anyone who doesn’t ski. In Oro-Medonte, Horseshoe Resort has night skiing and grooms cross-country trails on the edge of the Copeland Forest, and Mount St. Louis Moonstone, a few minutes further up Highway 400, has the most runs of the three and night skiing as well. Cottages around Lake Simcoe make it easy to ski a different hill each day.

Best for: the shortest drive, families, night skiing

Blue Mountains & Collingwood

2. Blue Mountain & Collingwood: the big resort

≈ 2 h from Toronto · Ontario

Blue Mountain is Ontario’s biggest ski resort and the only big public hill in the area, with a pedestrian village at its base and lit trails for night skiing. The other ski areas you see along the escarpment, such as Alpine, Beaver Valley, Craigleith, Georgian Peaks and Osler Bluff, are private clubs for members only, so plan your days around Blue. Large chalets in Collingwood, Craigleith and Thornbury suit several families or a group of friends.

Best for: a ski week, groups, a resort village

Haliburton Highlands

3. Haliburton Highlands: Sir Sam’s

≈ 2½–3 h from Toronto · Ontario

Sir Sam’s Ski & Ride, above Eagle Lake near the village of Haliburton, has been a family ski hill since 1965 and feels nothing like the busy resorts further south. Pair a ski day with snowmobiling, dog sledding or skating on a frozen lake. Owners on our site rent lake homes further east around Bancroft, Lake St. Peter and L’Amable, about an hour’s drive from the hill and a good base for a winter week that is not only about skiing.

Best for: a quiet family hill, a mixed winter week

Muskoka

4. Muskoka: cross-country skiing and skating

≈ 2–2½ h from Toronto · Ontario

For skiing without lift lines, Arrowhead Provincial Park near Huntsville grooms cross-country ski trails through the forest, next to its well-known skating trail. Algonquin Park’s groomed Fen Lake ski trail, by the West Gate, is less than an hour further east on Highway 60. A Muskoka cottage is a calm base for couples and families who prefer the trails to the slopes.

Best for: cross-country skiing, skating, a calm weekend

Tips for a ski chalet near Toronto

  • Check the hill’s own website before you go: opening dates, night-skiing hours and ticket prices change every season and depend on the weather.
  • Buy lift tickets online in advance for weekends and holidays. Saturdays, Christmas week and March Break are the busiest days; a weekday or an evening is calmer.
  • Highway 400 is slow northbound on Friday evenings and southbound on Sunday afternoons. A chalet lets you leave early or late and avoid the worst of it.
  • Winter tires are not required by law in Ontario, but they make a real difference on cottage roads and escarpment hills.
  • Ask the owner how far the chalet is from the hill, whether there is a place to dry boots and store skis, and whether the driveway is ploughed after a storm.
  • A large chalet shared by two or three families is often the best value for a ski weekend. Ask about the number of beds, not just bedrooms.

Every cottage and chalet on our site is rented directly from its owner, with no booking fees. Open an area above to see what owners offer there, or use the “winter” filter in search to find winter-ready places and write to the owner about your dates.
