Best chalet regions near Montreal

Where to rent a chalet within one to four hours of Montreal, closest first: lakes, mountains, ski hills and quiet forest.

Montreal sits at the edge of some of the best chalet country in North America. An hour north are the Laurentians and Lanaudière, an hour east the rolling Eastern Townships, and a few hours down the river the mountains of Charlevoix drop straight into the St. Lawrence.

All six regions below have lakes for summer and snow for winter, so the choice comes down to style: a busy resort village, a quiet lake in the woods, vineyards and covered bridges, or a dramatic river view. In Quebec every chalet rental must show its CITQ registration number, and every listing on our site does.

Laurentians

1. The Laurentians

≈ 1–1½ h from Montreal · Quebec

Quebec’s favourite chalet country, starting an hour north of the city. Saint-Sauveur and Val-David are close and lively, Mont-Tremblant has its pedestrian village, ski slopes and a huge national park, and the P’tit Train du Nord trail links the villages by bike in summer and on skis in winter. Lakes are everywhere: Lac des Sables, Lac Supérieur, Lac Tremblant.

Best for: skiing, lake chalets, an easy drive

Eastern Townships

2. Eastern Townships

≈ 1–1½ h from Montreal · Quebec

Round green mountains, covered bridges and Victorian villages between Montreal and Vermont. Spend summer days on Lake Memphremagog in Magog or on Lake Massawippi at North Hatley, follow the wine route, ski at Orford, Sutton or Bromont, and see the stars at the Mont-Mégantic dark-sky reserve. Fall colours peak in late September.

Best for: wine route, lakeside villages, fall colours

Lanaudière

3. Lanaudière

≈ 1–2½ h from Montreal · Quebec

A little quieter than the Laurentians next door, with chalets on big clear lakes like Archambault, Ouareau and the vast Taureau reservoir. Waterfalls in Rawdon, family ski hills in Saint-Côme and Saint-Donat, snowmobile trails and some of the best canoe-camping close to Montreal. Chalets with hot tubs fill fast in winter.

Best for: quiet lakes, snowmobiling, families

Outaouais

4. Outaouais

≈ 1½ h from Montreal · Quebec

From Montreal, the Petite-Nation side of the Outaouais is about an hour and a half away: Montebello, the wildlife of Parc Omega and chalets on Lac Simon. Further west, Gatineau Park’s forests and lakes start right across the river from Ottawa, with cross-country skiing in winter and the Nordik spa in Chelsea.

Best for: lakes, wildlife, a meeting point with Ottawa friends

Mauricie

5. Mauricie

≈ 1½–2 h from Montreal · Quebec

Halfway to Quebec City and north into a vast land of forest and lakes. La Mauricie National Park has canoe routes and lookouts over Lac Wapizagonke, and around Saint-Alexis-des-Monts and Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc you will find lakeside chalets, outfitters and excellent fishing. Winter brings snowmobiling and ice fishing.

Best for: canoeing, fishing, nature

Charlevoix

6. Charlevoix

≈ 4 h from Montreal · Quebec

The longest drive on this list and the most dramatic scenery: mountains that drop straight into the St. Lawrence, galleries and bakeries in Baie-Saint-Paul, a celebrated food route, the canyon of the Hautes-Gorges and skiing at Le Massif with river views from every run. Worth it for a full week rather than a weekend.

Best for: a week away, food, skiing with a river view

Tips for renting a chalet near Montreal

  • Check the CITQ registration number on the listing: every short-term rental in Quebec must show one.
  • From December 1 to March 15 winter tires are required in Quebec, and many chalet driveways are steep. Ask the owner about snow clearing and parking.
  • Book the holidays, spring break and fall-colour weekends early, especially chalets with a spa (hot tub) near Tremblant, Saint-Sauveur and Orford.
  • Leaving on Friday afternoon? Autoroute 15 north and Autoroute 10 east are busiest between 3 and 7 pm.
  • Ask what is included: linens, firewood, canoes or kayaks, and whether the lake is good for swimming.

Every chalet on our site is rented directly from its owner, with no booking fees. Open a region above to see chalets for rent there, read the full local guide and write to the owner about your dates.
