Best cabin getaways near Vancouver

Mountains, ocean coves, hot springs and warm lakes within one to four and a half hours of Vancouver, closest first.

From Vancouver, the best getaways are often a ferry ride away. Within an hour or two you can be in a Whistler chalet, an oceanfront cabin on the Sunshine Coast or a lake cabin in the Fraser Valley; a little further, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands slow life right down, and the Okanagan offers hot, dry summers on warm lakes.

Here are six regions, ordered by travel time from Vancouver. Where a ferry is involved, book your sailing early in summer and on long weekends. In British Columbia every short-term rental ad must show the provincial registration number, and every listing on our site does.

Whistler & Sea-to-Sky

1. Whistler & the Sea-to-Sky

≈ 1–2 h from Vancouver · British Columbia

The Sea-to-Sky Highway climbs from Howe Sound past the granite cliffs of Squamish to Whistler, North America’s biggest ski resort. Ski from late November to April; in summer the mountains turn into bike parks and trails above turquoise lakes like Alta and Green Lake. Squamish cabins are an hour from the city, Whistler about two.

Best for: skiing, mountain biking, alpine lakes

Sunshine Coast

2. Sunshine Coast

≈ 1–1½ h from Vancouver · British Columbia

It feels like an island but is part of the mainland, reached by a 40-minute ferry from Horseshoe Bay. Gibsons, Roberts Creek, Sechelt and Pender Harbour line a coast of sheltered bays and forest. Kayak calm inlets, watch the tidal rapids at Skookumchuck Narrows and stay in an oceanfront cabin.

Best for: oceanfront cabins, kayaking, slowing down

Fraser Valley & Harrison

3. Fraser Valley

≈ 1¼–2 h from Vancouver · British Columbia

Hot springs and mountain lakes about an hour or two east of the city. Harrison Hot Springs sits on a big lake with a sandy beach, Cultus Lake has warm water and a water park, and Hope is the gateway to the Othello Tunnels. In November and December thousands of bald eagles gather on the Harrison River.

Best for: hot springs, family lake days, no ferry

Vancouver Island

4. Vancouver Island

≈ 1½–2 h from Vancouver · British Columbia

BC Ferries reach Nanaimo or Victoria in about an hour and a half to two hours. From there: the warm sandy beaches of Parksville and Qualicum, the surf and rainforest of Tofino and Ucluelet (about three hours from Nanaimo), and Cathedral Grove on the way. Tofino is also the place for winter storm watching.

Best for: beaches, surfing, storm watching

Gulf Islands

5. Gulf Islands

≈ 35 min – 3 h from Vancouver · British Columbia

Salt Spring, Galiano, Mayne, Pender and Saturna sit in the calm Salish Sea, reached by ferry from Tsawwassen or by float plane. Life slows down to Saturday markets, farm stands, artists’ studios and kayaking among seals and eagles, with some of the mildest weather in Canada.

Best for: quiet island time, couples, markets

Okanagan

6. The Okanagan

≈ 4–4½ h from Vancouver · British Columbia

About four hours by the Coquihalla to British Columbia’s sunniest lake country. Okanagan Lake runs between Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton, the water is warm and the valley has more than 180 wineries. In winter Big White, SilverStar and Apex bring powder skiing.

Best for: hot summers, warm lakes, wineries
