Best cottage regions near Winnipeg

Prairie beaches, Canadian Shield lakes and a national park, from 30 minutes to about three hours from Winnipeg, closest first.

Winnipeg sits where the prairie meets two of the biggest lakes in Canada and, just to the east, the granite and pine of the Canadian Shield. Within an hour you can be on the white sand of Grand Beach; in an hour and a half, on a rocky Whiteshell lake; in two, on the islands of Lake of the Woods. North-west, Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park is Manitoba’s classic resort lake.

Here are five regions, ordered by driving time from Winnipeg. Each one links to cottages for rent there and to our full local guide.

Interlake

1. The Interlake

≈ 30 min – 1½ h from Winnipeg · Manitoba

Between Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba, the Interlake is quiet farm-and-lake country. Cottagers head to the Lake Manitoba beaches at Lundar and Twin Lakes, about an hour and a half away, and to the bays north of Gimli. Oak Hammock Marsh, 30 minutes from the city, is one of the best bird-watching spots in Canada, and the sunsets over Lake Manitoba are spectacular.

Best for: quiet weekends, birds, sunsets

Lake Winnipeg beaches

2. Lake Winnipeg beaches

≈ 1–2 h from Winnipeg · Manitoba

Manitoba’s favourite beaches are about an hour north of the city. Grand Beach has white sand and dunes, Winnipeg Beach and Gimli have boardwalks, piers and summer festivals, and car-free Victoria Beach and Hecla Island, about two hours away, are quieter. The water is shallow and warm by mid-summer, which makes it ideal with children.

Best for: families, sandy beaches, warm water

Whiteshell

3. The Whiteshell

≈ 1½ h from Winnipeg · Manitoba

About an hour and a half east on the Trans-Canada, the prairie ends and the Canadian Shield begins: pink granite, pine forest and more than 200 lakes. Falcon Lake has a beach, golf and a small ski hill, West Hawk Lake fills a meteorite crater, and Brereton, Caddy and Big Whiteshell lakes are lined with cabins. Paddle between rocky islands or hike the Mantario Trail.

Best for: cabins on the rocks, canoeing, four seasons

Northern Ontario

4. Kenora & Lake of the Woods

≈ 2 h from Winnipeg · Ontario

About two hours from Winnipeg, just across the Ontario border, Lake of the Woods has thousands of islands, deep bays and excellent fishing, with Kenora as its lively harbour town. Many Winnipeg families have cottaged here for generations. Remember that Kenora is on Central time, like Winnipeg, while most of Ontario is an hour ahead.

Best for: big water, islands, fishing

Riding Mountain & Clear Lake

5. Riding Mountain & Clear Lake

≈ 3 h from Winnipeg · Manitoba

About three hours north-west, Riding Mountain National Park rises from the prairie on the Manitoba Escarpment. Wasagaming, on Clear Lake, has a beach, a pier and a summer-resort feel; bison roam the meadows at Lake Audy, and late September brings fall colours and elk bugling. Cabins in Onanole, Erickson and around the park make a good base.

Best for: a full week, wildlife, a national park

Tips for renting a cottage near Winnipeg

  • Book July and August early on Lake Winnipeg and Clear Lake; June and September weeks are easier to find and cheaper.
  • A Parks Canada pass is required to stop in Riding Mountain National Park.
  • Lake Winnipeg is shallow and warms quickly in summer, but wind can change the waves fast. Watch the flags on public beaches.
  • Ask the owner whether the cottage is winterized: many Whiteshell and Lake of the Woods cabins are open only from May to October.
  • Mosquitoes peak in June and early July. Bring bug spray and ask whether there is a screened porch.
