Best cabin getaways near Calgary

Mountain chalets, prairie lakes and warm B.C. beaches from one to six hours from Calgary, closest first.

Calgary has the Rockies on its doorstep. In an hour you can be in a Canmore chalet looking up at the Three Sisters; in an hour and a half, on the beach at Sylvan Lake. Three hours south, Waterton’s mountains rise straight out of the prairie, and across the B.C. border the Columbia Valley and Shuswap Lake offer warm lakes in summer and powder in winter.

Here are five regions, ordered by driving time from Calgary. In British Columbia every short-term rental ad must show the provincial registration number, and every listing on our site does.

Banff, Canmore & the Rockies

1. Canmore, Banff & the Rockies

≈ 1–2 h from Calgary · Alberta

Canmore is about an hour west of Calgary, just outside Banff National Park, with chalets and condos facing the Three Sisters. From there, Banff’s hot springs and gondola are 20 minutes away, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake glow turquoise in summer, and Sunshine, Lake Louise and Norquay offer skiing from November into spring. Kananaskis Country adds lakes, trails and a Nordic spa.

Southern Alberta & Waterton

3. Waterton & the Crowsnest Pass

Waterton Lakes National Park, about three hours south, is where the Rockies meet the prairie around a deep lake, with the historic Prince of Wales Hotel above the water. The mountain towns of the Crowsnest Pass are about 2½ hours away, close to skiing at Castle Mountain from December to April, and Drumheller’s dinosaur badlands are about 1½ hours north-east of the city.

Best for: quieter mountains, wildlife, history

4. Invermere, Radium & the Columbia Valley

About three hours from Calgary through Kootenay National Park, the Columbia Valley has warm beaches on Lake Windermere in summer and a long skating trail on the same lake in winter. Soak in the hot pools at Radium Hot Springs, ski at Panorama, or drive on to Kicking Horse at Golden. The Columbia Valley keeps Alberta’s time zone.

Tips for a cabin getaway from Calgary

  • A Parks Canada pass is required to stop in Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Waterton national parks. Canmore and Kananaskis are outside the national parks.
  • Book Canmore and Banff for summer and ski season months ahead; September is quieter and the larches turn gold.
  • Check the provincial registration number on any B.C. listing: it is required on every short-term rental ad there.
  • Shuswap Lake is on Pacific time, an hour behind Calgary, while the Columbia Valley keeps Mountain time. Check check-in times accordingly.
  • Carry bear spray on mountain trails and ask the owner about wildlife around the cabin.
