Discover Lake St. Peter & Maynooth

Maynooth is a small village in the Municipality of Hastings Highlands, on Highway 62 north of Bancroft, where the old Hastings, Madawaska and Peterson colonization roads met. Highway 127 starts here and runs about 39 km north through forest to Highway 60 near Whitney and Algonquin Park — and the only community along the way is Lake St. Peter, a lake with cottages all around it and a small provincial park on its shore.

Lake St. Peter Provincial Park has sandy beaches, hiking, canoe rentals and a campground; it is open from spring to mid-October (check ontarioparks.ca for this year’s dates). A cottage for rent on Lake St. Peter or near Maynooth puts you between two worlds: Bancroft’s shops, rail trail and rock hunting about half an hour south, and Algonquin’s East Gate about the same distance north. In winter the area is snowmobile country. Lake St. Peter is about 3½ hours from Toronto and from Ottawa.
