Where they are

Before you go to a cottage in winter

  • Ask how the road and the driveway are cleared after a snowfall, and where to park.
  • Winter tires are a must on cottage roads; in Quebec they are required by law from December 1 to March 15.
  • Ask how the cottage is heated, whether firewood is supplied and what to do if the power goes out.
  • Ask whether the water runs all winter and whether the tap water is drinkable.
  • Pack a winter car kit: shovel, blanket, booster cables, flashlight and something to eat.
  • Ask the owner about nearby ski hills, snowshoe and snowmobile trails, and whether you can start from the property.
