Before you light the fire

• Ask whether firewood is supplied, or where to buy it nearby. Buy it locally: moving firewood can spread invasive insects.
• Ask the owner how the fireplace works: the damper, the screen and where the ashes go.
• Never leave a fire unattended, and put ashes in a metal container outside, away from the cottage.
• Check that the cottage has working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
• If you also want a wood stove or a hot tub, look at the amenities on each listing.
