Lake of Bays lives up to its name: a large, deep lake with long arms and sheltered bays, quieter than the big three Muskoka lakes but just as beautiful. The villages of Baysville, Dorset and Dwight have general stores, marinas and summer markets, and historic Bigwin Island, once a grand resort, now has a golf course in the middle of the lake.
Climb the Dorset Lookout Tower for one of Ontario’s best fall-colour views over the lake, paddle to quiet bays at sunrise, and drive 30 minutes to Algonquin Park’s West Gate. A cottage for rent on Lake of Bays is ideal for families who want big-lake boating with fewer crowds. Baysville is about 2½ hours from Toronto; Dorset about 2¾ hours.
