Thornbury and Meaford sit where the Beaver River meets Georgian Bay, surrounded by apple orchards that bloom white in May and fill the farm stands in fall. Thornbury has a small harbour, a fish ladder on the river and a main street of good restaurants and shops; Meaford adds a waterfront park and a historic downtown with a hall for concerts.
A cottage for rent near Thornbury is a quieter alternative to the busy ski villages, yet only 15 minutes from Blue Mountain. Summer is for swimming and paddling the bay and cycling the Georgian Trail; fall is for apples and colour in the Beaver Valley. Thornbury is about 2¼ hours from Toronto.
