Big Rideau Lake is the largest lake on the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with deep clear water, islands and long views. The village of Portland, on its south shore, has a marina, a general store and a waterfront restaurant where boaters stop all summer, and Rideau Ferry sits at its northern end.
A cottage for rent on Big Rideau Lake is great for boating — you can cruise the canal to Westport, Smiths Falls or all the way to Ottawa — and for swimming and fishing. Murphys Point Provincial Park nearby has beaches, trails and an old mica mine you can tour. Portland is about 1¼ hours from Ottawa and 45 minutes from Kingston.
